PACE On The Hill Highlights

Fulfilling the “Diversity and Democracy:  America’s Strength” project that was initiated in August, 2011 with a national award by Southwest Airlines, PACE staff and clients visited Washington, DC from May 6 – 10 to “Tell their stories” to Federal policy makers and agency staff.  Coinciding with Asian Pacific Islander Heritage month, the group also had the opportunity to meet with leaders from national organizations and non profit organizations like PACE from throughout the United States.
During their busy four days in our nation’s Capitol, the group participated in many activities including:

  • The Asian American Heritage Month Ceremony hosted by the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) at the U. S. Capitol.
  • The National Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Annual meeting at the U. S. Capitol.
  • The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) Annual Gala Awards Dinner where President Obama gave the keynote address.
  • White House Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Briefing at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
  • Tri-Caucus Briefing including the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Congressional Black Caucus at the Conference Room of Minority Leader Representative Nancy Pelosi.

Agencies that met with the PACE delegation included:

  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start Program.
  • Small Business Administration
  • White House Office of Public Engagement

Delegation members also had the opportunity to visit the offices of their own representatives in Congress including:

  • Congressman Xavier Becerra
  • Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard
  • Congresswoman Grace Napolitano
  • Congressman Adam Schiff
  • Senator Barbara Boxer
